17. Sea Birds
Richard Sumner
Kwakwaka'wakw
Yellow Cedar
55" x 5" x 1"
SOLD

It was very important to Richard Sumner to design a paddle that was elegant and functional. Light and well balanced, this paddle could be used to power a canoe through the water. The formline design that graces both sides of the blade is carefully painted in many layers giving it a relief-like feel. The design relates to the four directions and is meant to catch the eye when used.

John Marston
Coast Salish
Yellow Cedar, Abalone, Twine
64" x 7" x 1.5"
SOLD

John Marston’s sculptural carving and unpainted design harmonizes with the natural beauty of the yellow cedar and abalone inlays in this paddle. His paddle features abstracted Coast Salish imagery of the coastal shoreline. Waves, shore birds, feathers and grasses are all subtly referred to in this extraordinary paddle.
