Whaler's Magic Paddle
Joe David
Nuu Chah Nulth
Yellow Cedar
61" x 5" x 2"
$7,100.00 CAD

Based on designs Joe David saw represented on historic model canoes in his youth, one side of the blade is painted with a design that mirrors a canoe from above, including the benches. On the other side, the artist painted an intriguing, simple red line that he has seen painted on old paddles, although he has no explanation as to its purpose. Joe David believes that designs of the past, like this one, were infused with an ancient knowledge and power.

Maynard Johnny Jr.
Coast Salish
Yellow Cedar, Twine
66” x 7” x 1.5”

This paddle tells the well known Northwest Coast tale of how Raven brought light to the world. In the beginning, Raven had bright white feathers as shown on one side of Maynard’s paddle. After he stole the light from the well guarded box, he escaped through a smoke hole in the roof of the long house and emerged with blackened feathers, as depicted on the reverse of the paddle.
